Science class – Finger print

Last Sunday, our first STEM class took part outdoor. All students were eager to discover their finger prints. What a surprise our finger prints are so different.  And this tiny doodle prints can even be used as an identity!

We are thankful to Saigon scientists organization for providing this interesting science class. Many thanks to all volunteers and teachers who have joined our activity. Hope to see you in our next class.

[Announcement] Science class: The fingerprints

Have you ever wondered how we can tell the differences between identical twins that share the exact same look? If one of them commits a crime, how would the police know which one is actually guilty? With recent advanced technology, forensic science is able to tease out several minute differences in our genomes that help to differentiate the twins. However, back in the old days, how were the police and detectives able to do their jobs and maintain justice in our society? It is because in addition to our appearances and DNA sequences, each and everyone of us has another feature that identifies who we are – the fingerprints.  Fingerprints are composed by patterns of ridges and valleys found on our fingertips, and they are extremely unique for each individual. No two people have ever been found with the same fingerprints. Even identical twins have different fingerprints. Also, do you know that we actually leave our fingerprints on everything we touch? That is how the detectives are able to follow traces of criminals, figure out who they are and put them in jail. Sound cool, right?

Want to study more on how fingerprints are formed, how they can be so unique, and how we are able to record them accurately and distinguish one from another? You are welcome to join us and the local kids in a science event on September 25th, 2016. This activity is supported by the Vietnamese STEM community.

Call for donation: Give a book, open a new horizon

You are so excited to fill up your room with the latest best seller books, yet still wonder how to empty all the shelves full of old textbooks from elementary school to college. We are happy to give you a hand!

Our community library is launching a book donation campaign called “Give a book, open a new horizon”. Our commitment is to provide textbooks, books and school supplies for poor children from working-class families around the area of Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. These children are thirsty for not only good books but good education as well. Therefore, any of your contribution is very much appreciated.

Here is some examples of items in need:

  • Children literature
  • Science books and encyclopedias for children
  • Chicken soup for the soul and self help books

We welcome all kinds of donation, new to slightly used items, in English or Vietnamese. To encourage reading and learning among the kids, we especially love to have books with colorful pictures and illustrations. To participate, please fill out the form below, or contact us directly. We will arrange to pick up your donation.

J.K. Rowling once said, “I do believe something very magical can happen when you read a good book”. Let’s join us in this campaign to make reading become a learning habit of these children, and ultimately give them support to build their own future.

Many thanks for your kindness and generosity!
